　亀山市議会は、市民の代表として選挙で選ばれた18名の議員で構成され、同じく選挙で選ばれた亀山市長とともに市の代表機関です。　地方が主体となる新しい地方自治の時代を迎え、市議会の果たす役割と責任は、ますます重要になってきています。　そこで、二元代表制のもと、市政の一翼を担う市議会として、行政の監視機能と、自らの政策形成機能を強化していかなければなりません。　また、議会は、市民のための議会であることが市民からの負託の原点であり、そのために、市民ニーズを的確に把握し、諸施策の更なる充実が図られるよう取り組んでいます。　議会は、年４回の定例会と、必要に応じ臨時会を開催しています。そして、「総務委員会」、「教育民生委員会」、「産業建設委員会」、「予算決算委員会」の4つの常任委員会を設置し、必要に応じて専門的な調査・研究を行う特別委員会が設置されます。　これらの議会活動については、ケーブルテレビとインターネットで会議の様子や議会報告番組を放映しているほか、議会だよりやホームページでもお知らせしています。市民に身近な開かれた議会へEorts to Make the City Assembly Open to the PublicThe Kameyama City Assembly, consisting of 18 elected members, represents the citizens of Kameyama City, along with the mayor who too is elected through an election.With the coming of the age of local autonomy, the assembly is now expected to play more and more signicant and responsible roles.Under the dual representation system, the assembly, which plays an important part in municipal government, must strengthen its functions to supervise the administration and shape municipal policies.Besides, the members of the assembly work on the enrichment of their policies by correctly understanding the needs of the citizens because they are elected with a mandate to serve the public interest.Every year, the assembly holds not only four regular sessions but also extraordinary sessions if needed. In addition, it establishes four standing committees, namely the “General Affairs Committee,” the “Education and Livelihood Committee,” the “Industrial Construction Committee ” and the “Budget and Audit Committee,” as well as a special committee to conduct specialized research and study if necessary.We provide details on such activities of the assembly by broadcasting its sessions and programs made to publicize its ocial reports on the Internet and cable television as well as by oering information on its activities through our ocial website and periodical publications.36
